I first came across Scan My Teeth on the Google Play Store when I was looking for a way to track some minor changes I noticed in my dental alignment. Developed by Tabica Group, this health and fitness app launched a couple of years ago and is available for free download on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. The app uses your phone's camera to scan your teeth and create a 3D model, allowing you to monitor shifts over time. You do not need to register an account to use the basic scanning functions, which I really appreciate. It has amassed over 100,000 installs on the Google Play Store alone, and while the app itself is free, there are optional in-app purchases for advanced reports and dentist consultation features. There are also occasional in-app ads, but they are not too intrusive.
Using this app is pretty straightforward. After you download and install it, you simply open the app and follow the guided scan. You tilt your head to let the camera capture your upper and lower teeth from different angles. A tip I picked up is to make sure you are in a well-lit room, as poor lighting can make the scan fail. The app provides a color-coded map of your teeth after each scan, showing any changes in alignment. For best results, I try to scan my teeth at the same time of day under similar conditions. You can save each scan in your history, making it easy to compare images side by side. The free version lets you store quite a few scans, so you don't need to purchase anything to get value out of the app.
I have tried a couple of similar apps like Dental Monitoring and Byte, but they are mostly tied to specific orthodontic treatments or require a subscription. Scan My Teeth feels more like a general tool for anyone who wants to keep an eye on their dental health. It is not trying to sell you a treatment plan, which I find refreshing. The fact that it is just a simple scanner with no hidden costs or mandatory subscriptions makes it my first choice when I want to check on my teeth between dentist visits. The 3D model it produces is surprisingly detailed for a free app, and I have found it helpful for showing my dentist specific areas of concern.
Features
- 😁 Real-time 3D Modeling: Unlike other apps that just take flat images, Scan My Teeth builds a fully rotatable 3D model of your teeth. With the Byte app, you only get a basic video of your smile, but here you can zoom in and look at every tooth from any angle. This makes it much easier to spot subtle changes.
- 😁 No Account Required: I really like that I can use the core scanning feature without signing up. Apps like Dental Monitoring force you to create a profile and link to a provider before you can do anything. With Scan My Teeth, you just download it from the Google Play Store and start scanning immediately.
- 😁 Automatic Change Detection: The app highlights areas where your teeth have shifted compared to your previous scan. It uses a simple red-yellow-green color scale to show the degree of movement. I have not seen this feature in free apps like Tooth Scan, which only lets you view images side by side manually.
Pros
- ✅ Cost: The app is completely free to install from the Google Play Store with no upfront payment. Similar apps like SmileDirectClub require a paid consultation just to get started.
- ✅ Privacy: Since you do not need to register, your scan data stays on your phone. With other apps like OrthoFX, your data is uploaded to their servers, which I was not comfortable with.
- ✅ Simplicity: The app does one thing and does it well. It does not overload you with marketing or treatment upsells like many dental apps do after you install them.
Cons
- ❌ Limited Analysis: The app can only track alignment changes and does not check for cavities or gum health. Apps like Dentee offer a basic symptom checker, but Scan My Teeth does not have anything like that.
- ❌ Occasional Scan Failures: If your lighting is dim or your phone camera is older, the scan might not process. I had this problem on an Android device, while apps like Dental Monitoring are more forgiving with camera quality.
- ❌ In-App Purchase Nag: After a few free scans, the app prompts you to buy the premium report. It is not pushy, but it is a bit annoying. Other apps like TrayMinder show ads but do not push purchases as frequently.
