I've been using the GPS Speedometer: Speed Tracker app from SM Infotech for a few months now, and it's honestly one of the most straightforward navigation-adjacent apps I have on my phone. For anyone unfamiliar, it's a free-to-download utility that uses your phone's built-in GPS to show your real-time speed, distance traveled, and trip duration. I first grabbed it from the Google Play Store back in early 2023, and according to the store page, it's racked up over 10 million installs globally. There's no forced registration to start using it, which I appreciate immensely, though you do have the option to create a free account if you want to save your trip history to the cloud. It's free to install, but like many apps in this genre, there are banner ads at the bottom and occasional full-screen ads between trips. You can pay a small fee to remove these ads entirely if they bother you.
Using this speed tracker app is pretty much plug-and-play. You open it, grant location permissions, and it locks onto satellites within a few seconds. The default screen shows your current speed in a large, easy-to-read digital display. There's also a map view that tracks your route on the road. One tip I found handy: if you're using it for something like a road trip, you can set an overspeed alarm. Just tap the speed limit icon, set a value, and the app will shout at you if you go over that speed. It's a great way to avoid unwanted tickets. Another neat feature is the ability to switch between units like km/h and mph, which is essential if you're crossing borders. I also like that you can start a new trip with a single tap on the "Start" button, and it will pause automatically when you stop moving, so you don't get false readings when you're stuck at a traffic light.
I chose this app over similar ones like DigiHUD Speedometer or SpeedView for a couple of reasons. First, it doesn't drain my battery as fast as some of those others. Second, the interface is cleaner and less cluttered. While DigiHUD has some cool HUD projection features, this one feels more like a professional tool and less like a toy. It also handles background tracking better; I can switch to Spotify and the app keeps recording my trip without crashing.
Features
- 🏁 Real-time speed accuracy: This is the main reason I stick with this app. It locks onto GPS satellites incredibly fast, usually within 2-3 seconds, and the readings are very stable. I compared it with my car's built-in speedometer and a standalone Garmin unit, and the difference was less than 1 km/h at highway speeds. In contrast, a similar app called SpeedView often lagged by a second or two, showing a slightly delayed speed on sharp turns or quick accelerations.
- 🗺️ Built-in map with route recording: Unlike some basic speedometer apps that only show a number, this one includes a detailed map that tracks your exact route. When I finish a trip, I can review the entire path on the map with color-coded sections showing where I was speeding or driving slowly. This is something you'd normally find in a premium app like TomTom Speed Cameras, but it's included here for free.
- ⏰ Simple trip logging and statistics: The app automatically creates separate trip logs every time you hit "Start" and "Stop." Each log shows the average speed, max speed, distance, and duration. I've used this to compare different routes during my daily commute. The data is presented in a simple list view, not a confusing dashboard. Competing apps like Ulysse Speedometer often bury this data behind menus or make you pay for it.
Pros
- ✅ Completely free core functionality: You can use the entire speedometer and trip logging feature without paying a cent. There's no limit on the number of trips you can log, which is rare. Similar apps like DigiHUD Speedometer lock the trip history feature behind a subscription after the first 10 trips.
- ✅ Lightweight and battery efficient: The app is only about 15 MB in size and doesn't drain my phone's battery as aggressively as some others. I ran this app and GPS Test side-by-side for an hour, and this one used about 15% less battery, likely because SM Infotech optimized the GPS polling intervals well.
- ✅ Minimal permissions required: It only asks for location access (which is necessary for GPS) and storage (for saving trip logs). It doesn't request access to your contacts, camera, or SMS, which is refreshing. Many speedometer apps on the Google Play Store ask for excessive permissions that have nothing to do with their function.
Cons
- ❌ In-app ads can be intrusive: While the app is free, the ads are a bit aggressive. After finishing a long trip, you're often hit with a full-screen video ad before you can see your trip summary. You can remove them with a small one-time payment, but it feels like the free experience is purposely made annoying to push you toward that purchase.
- ❌ Lack of offline maps: The map view requires an internet connection to load street names and terrain. If you're in a remote area with no signal, the map shows a blank background with just your route line. Offline apps like OSMAnd+ handle this much better by storing maps locally on your device.
- ❌ No voice guidance or speed camera alerts: Unlike Waze or the paid version of TomTom Speed Cameras, this app doesn't audibly warn you about upcoming speed cameras or red-light cameras. You only get the overspeed alarm you set manually. This feels like a missed opportunity compared to competitors that integrate this feature for free.
