I have been using Learn English, Spanish: Learna, developed by Deep Flow Apps, for a little over a month now. This language learning app mainly focuses on teaching English and Spanish through a system of flashcards and spaced repetition. From what I saw on Google Play, it first launched around 2023 and it is available for free to download on both the Google Play Store and the App Store. The install count is still relatively modest on Google Play, sitting at a few hundred thousand, but it seems to be growing. You can download and install the app completely for free; there is no mandatory registration to start using the core features, which I really appreciated. However, there is a premium subscription option in the app that unlocks extra lessons and removes the in-app ads. While using the free version, you will definitely see some advertisements after completing a lesson.
Using the Learna app is pretty straightforward. Once you open it up, you pick the language you want to learn, either English or Spanish, and then it gives you a set of vocabulary cards. The app uses spaced repetition, so it shows you a word, you check if you remember it, and then it schedules that word to appear again later. I found that the best way to use this app is to spend just ten minutes a day on it and to actually say the words out loud when they pop up. A big tip for using the app effectively is to enable the notification reminders; without them, it is very easy to forget to practice. The app also has a simple quiz mode at the end of each deck, which helps test your recall before you move on.
Compared to other language tools I have tried, I chose Learna over something like Duolingo because it feels less like a game and more like a direct study tool. Duolingo has a lot of bells and whistles, but I often found myself just tapping buttons without really learning. With Learna, the focus is purely on vocabulary retention. It does not have the social features or the long stories that apps like Babbel or Memrise offer, but for someone like me who just wants to build a solid foundation of words quickly, it works better.
Features
- 🔍 Spaced Repetition System: This is the core of the Learna app and its standout feature compared to something like Duolingo. While Duolingo relies heavily on a linear lesson path, Learna smartly schedules reviews for words you are about to forget. I noticed that words I struggled with kept reappearing in my practice sessions, which helped cement them into my memory much more effectively than the typical level-based games.
- 📚 Pure Vocabulary Focus: Unlike bigger apps that mix in grammar lessons, stories, and listening exercises all at once, Learna keeps things simple. It focuses almost entirely on word and phrase recall. This makes it a perfect companion app. I use it right before I open my main textbook or a Spanish podcast. It gets the vocabulary fresh in my mind without any distracting animations or stories.
- 🛡️ No Login Required: The app lets you download and start using it immediately without creating an account. This is a huge plus when comparing it to apps like Babbel or Rosetta Stone, which often force you to register before you can even see the interface. I just installed it from Google Play, opened it, and started learning right away.
Pros
- ⚡ Very Fast Loading: The app is incredibly lightweight. While Duolingo can sometimes lag or take a moment to load animations on my older phone, Learna opens and operates instantly. The cards flip smoothly, and there is no waiting between lessons.
- 💰 Affordable Premium: The in-app purchase to remove ads is very inexpensive compared to other language apps. Duolingo Plus or Babbel subscriptions can be pricey, but the premium option in Learna feels very fair for what you get, which is just an ad-free experience and a few extra decks.
- 🎯 Simple Interface: The design is minimalist. There are no leaderboards, no social feeds, no distracting badges. If you just want a pure, no-nonsense flashcard app for learning English or Spanish, this is it. It beats the overwhelming clutter of some other free apps.
Cons
- 🐌 Limited Content Depth: The main weakness is the amount of content. Compared to a giant like Duolingo, which has hundreds of units, Learna feels very limited. I ran out of the core vocabulary decks within a couple of weeks. After that, the app lacks the variety to keep intermediate learners engaged.
- 📱 No Grammar Explanations: As I mentioned, it is vocabulary-focused. But this is also a weakness. If you need to understand why a verb is conjugated a certain way, this app will not help you. Apps like Babbel are much better for explaining the rules behind the words.
- 🔇 Lack of Audio Variety: The app uses a single text-to-speech voice for pronunciation. It does not have the native speaker recordings you find in Memrise or Pimsleur. This can make it hard to learn the natural rhythm and accent of the Spanish or English language.
